Subject: Commercial support for Linux Java

Hi,
You have probably seen me post time and again on this list so the name
of our company may be familiar. Our company is a small Dallas based
systems integrator/software development house that specializes in open
systems and, where possible, free software consulting. While we are
not a large business (about 20 people) we have a loyal following of
prominent clients and do okay. You may also know us from the services
that we provide to Debian (debian.novare.net aka master.debian.org)
who intern helps the Gimp (cvs.gimp.org) and GNOME (cvs.gnome.org)
efforts. We provide this assistance because it is a small price to pay
for the incredible benefits, knowledge and energies that we derive
from our use of and participation in the Free Software phenomena.
My purpose in wasting your time with the above is to indicate our
seriousnes, our freedom of movement and our proven good intentions in
the free software arena. With this in mind I would like to announce
that our organization is willing to undertake the task of providing a
commercially supported Linux port of Java with the following caveats:
- I need to not go broke doing this.
- I need to understand precisely what we (the Linux/Freeware
community) need as far as our Linux/Freeware versions of Java go.
- I need support from the community to undertake this endeavour so
that the effort is taken seriously.
I have already begun to take steps in related areas and am reasonably
well connected within Sun (mostly from having big clients who ran into
trouble on Java projects).
As to why our organization would be a good choice:
- We are a serious Java developer who uses Linux as our primary
development environment. We actively develop industrial code for a
number of Fortune 500 clients.
- We are large enough to be stable and small enough to be commited.
- We will actively create Debian packages as well as RPMs.
So, there is my little proposal.
Comments?
